Dynamic Product Links for ShopSite

by Mike Masin on October 4, 2009

My friends at Affordable Preservation Co. asked how their ShopSite store could display alternate product links for specific referral traffic.  Affordable Preservation Co. had an email campaign with a link to a dedicated landing page.  The landing page had Add to Cart and More Info links for products that weren’t offered anywhere else in Affordable’s store.

The landing page worked well but Affordable knows that their visitors typically visit several pages on their site before they add an item to the cart.  If a shopper clicked off of the landing page they would not be able to return to the products offered in the email campaign unless they used the back-button.

My solution was to create a cookie on the landing page and JavaScript in the ShopSite templates to dynamically build the Add to Cart and More Info links. ShopSite’s Add to Cart links include the Product Number as an argument in the link URL; but they can also use the SKU.   If the JavaScript detected the cookie created by the landing page it inserted the SKU for the special offer products in the Add to Cart, otherwise, it inserted the SKU for the standard product.  Similarly, for the More Info links, the JavaScript built the URL that matched the type of product.

Mike,
Just a quick update. We launched the email campaign last week and it is working perfectly. Thanks for your great work.

Tom
